For example, let’s say an employee is consistently more productive than everyone else in the department. On the surface, this data may look positive, but it may not be. You need to ask if this is because the employee is doing a better job or because there are shortcuts being taken that could hurt the company as a whole. But, without a report of the key performance indicators, you would never have realized that this single employee was performing so far outside the norm.
By contrast, the same report could show that several workers spend less time performing a specific function of their job. Do these people just naturally move slower or think slower? Are they perhaps mismatched to the position? Do they need more training? Or, are they taking more breaks than everyone else in the department? To the average supervisor’s observation, they appear to be good employees who work steadily, and the indicators that would signal a below-average performance rate are invisible.
